President Prabowo Subianto has emphasized that the Indonesian government carefully considered various factors before engaging in negotiations with the United States to reduce import tariffs from 32% to 19%. He reiterated that the main focus throughout the discussions was to protect the interests of the Indonesian people, specifically the country’s workers. “We have conducted thorough analyses. We have engaged in negotiations. My priority is always my people. I must ensure the protection of our workers,” Prabowo stated during a press conference at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta.
Despite facing challenges, Prabowo mentioned that Indonesia maintained a strong stance during the negotiations. “We have taken a stand. This is our offer—we cannot compromise further. However, the crucial point is to safeguard the well-being of our workers,” he emphasized. The president also highlighted that Indonesia’s economy is robust, resilient, and well-prepared to withstand global uncertainties, including trade tensions.
Expressing optimism about the country’s economic prospects, Prabowo stated, “I am very optimistic. Our economy is solid. Whatever happens, we will remain stable.” Regarding the tariff negotiations with the U.S., Prabowo characterized the discussions as tough but ultimately fruitful. Both parties reached a mutual understanding after acknowledging each other’s strategic interests. “We have grasped their priorities, and they have understood ours. This understanding led to an agreement,” he explained.
“The tariff rate has been decreased from 32% to 19%. I continued negotiating—I had conversations with President Trump, who is known to be a tough negotiator,” Prabowo added. Previously, President Trump announced that a trade deal had been finalized with Indonesia, confirming the reduction of tariffs on Indonesian goods to 19%.
