Coinbase Global (COIN) is poised to make history by being listed on the prestigious Standard and Poor’s 500 (S&P 500) stock exchange in the United States on May 19, 2025. This move marks the first and only crypto company to achieve this milestone. According to Cointelegraph, S&P Global revealed that Coinbase will be replacing Discover Financial Services (DFS), which was recently acquired by Capital One Financial Corp (COF).

Alesia Haas, the CFO of Coinbase, commented that the company’s listing on the S&P 500 is a significant milestone for both Coinbase and the wider crypto industry. She emphasized, “Joining this prestigious index reflects how far Coinbase and the industry have come and signals where the world is heading.”

Coinbase joins the likes of Tesla (TSLA) and Block Inc. (SQ) as major corporate Bitcoin holders currently included in this index fund. The inclusion of Coinbase in the S&P 500 is expected to boost demand for its shares, as index funds and exchange-traded funds tracking the S&P 500 will need to purchase COIN shares to reflect the index.

Following the announcement, Coinbase’s stock immediately rose by 8.8% to $225.4 in after-hours trading, as reported by Google Finance. The company also ended the trading day with a 4% increase, bringing its market capitalization to $52.8 billion.
