Jakarta – Commander of the National Campaign Team Communication Team (TKN) Bravo Prabowo Gibran Campaign, Budisatrio Djiwandono explained that the nation’s self-sufficiency in food would be the top priority if the number 2 pair were elected to lead Indonesia. This must be done because the food crisis is imminent.
“The main sector targeted for self-sufficiency by Prabowo Gibran is food, water, and energy. In this sector, we should no longer rely on imports. Especially regarding food, Mr. Prabowo has stated that food is a matter of life and death for a nation,” explained Budisatrio to reporters in Jakarta (Sunday, 1/13).
The leader of the DPR RI Commission IV, which oversees agriculture, food, and maritime, explained that in Indonesia there is currently a food deficit due to population growth accompanied by a decrease in land productivity. He cited the crisis that has occurred with rice.
“BPS data shows that our population increases by around 3 million people annually. And this population growth has not been offset by an increase in arable land. Meanwhile, rice is consumed by almost all citizens,” he said.
Budisatrio continued to explain that this deficit cannot be covered by relying on imports from abroad.
“Learning from the wheat incident when the Ukraine-Russia war broke out, the supply chain was disrupted, causing our wheat prices, which are very dependent on imports, to sharply increase. We must not let this also happen to rice, which is our main staple,” he said.
To address this, Prabowo Gibran targets a minimum of four million hectares of additional arable land in a program called the Food Barn.
“This food barn will exist from the smallest village level by the farmers, to the national level by continuing the food estate. The way to do this is by increasing the planting index, intensifying and utilizing abandoned land,” said Budisatrio.
“Digital technology for agriculture will also be a priority. We will establish new paddy fields while also increasing the productivity of existing land with digital and modern tools and technology. There is no other choice, this must be done,” he added.
In the context of the presidential election itself, Budisatrio urged that the food crisis should be a healthy discussion topic because it is related to the country’s future.
“Taking sides on food issues should be a shared agreement. We are actually looking forward to various ideas to face the food crisis from each pair of candidates. From Prabowo Gibran, it is clear that we will continue the food estate and improve it into a Food Barn,” Budisatrio concluded. (SENOPATI)
